Welcome to Term 4

Our Topic this term is 'Dragons and Castles'

In Literacy the children will be using the story 'Tell me a Dragon' to design and describe their own dragon. They will also be making maps and writing instructions to catch a dragon. This term we are also looking at traditional tales. We will be writing character and setting descriptions. We are very excited about learning the story of Princess and the Pea, in preparation for our Year One performance in term 5.

In Maths we will be working on number bonds and looking at the related addition and subtraction facts. We will be using bar models to support addition and subtraction and making visual models for number bonds. We will also be using money to buy things in our class role play cafes.

In Science, we will be considering the properties of different materials.

In History and Geography we are learning about castles. We will look at the names of different features and what they are for. We will be also be thinking about the people who would have lived in castles a long time ago, including some kings and queens.

In Art and DT the children will be designing and making castles.

In R.E. will be thinking about Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and the Christian period of Lent.

The slide show for the Phonics Check Meeting that took place on Thursday 20th April can be found here.

Year 1 information

We encourage the children to bring in topic related materials for our 'Show and Tell'. We are also really pleased to hear about special achievements or places that the children have visited that might not be topic related.

Do remember that if you need to speak to one of us please catch us at the end of the school day, or make an appointment with the office staff. We are also looking for willing volunteers so if you can offer any help in school please let us know in order that we can arrange the relevant clearance, it is very much appreciated!

Parent Information

Please make sure your child has their book bag in school EVERY day as we will be continuing to have our ERIC session each day. Reading books will be changed once a week.

Children are also still encouraged to bring a bottle of water and a piece of fruit for the afternoon each day. They are able to buy healthy snacks from the tuck shop on a Friday with items costing from 10p to 30p each.

PLEASE make sure your child's clothes and belongings are labelled so they can be returned if mislaid.

Phonics

This game gives your child the opportunity to practise their phonics through blending them to read. We call the words that are nonsense words 'alien words'.

P.E. Information

P.E. days in Term 2 for both Year 1 classes are on a Tuesday and Thursday.

We remind you that the children MUST NOT wear earrings to school on these days if they are unable to take them out themselves, for safety reasons. They also need to have long hair tied back every day.

Please remember to check the size and fit of your child's plimsols regularly.

Home Learning Information

Home learning is sent home on a Friday and needs to be returned to school on the following Wednesday. This allows parents the option to encourage their child to do their home learning over the weekend, or if you are busy doing family activities, children can complete it on a week night.  If you need help with any aspect of this please let us know or add a note to the back of their work so that we can support any questions or queries you may have.
